Pre-Track Day Brake Inspection
Before heading to the circuit for a track day, your brake system requires thorough inspection and preparation. As a team that competes regularly in endurance racing, we know that proper preparation prevents performance issues on track.
1. Brake Pad Thickness Check
Measure your brake pad thickness:
- Minimum recommended: 3mm for track use
- Ideal thickness: 5mm or greater
- Inspect for uneven wear patterns
- Check both inner and outer pads
2. Brake Fluid Assessment
Brake fluid is often overlooked but critical:
- Check fluid level in reservoir
- Test for moisture content (should be less than 3%)
- Replace fluid if it’s over 2 years old
- Use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 high-temp fluid for track days
3. Rotor Condition Evaluation
Inspect your brake rotors carefully:
- Measure rotor thickness against manufacturer specs
- Check for cracks, especially near the edges
- Look for blue discoloration (overheating indicator)
- Ensure rotors are properly bedded to new pads
Pro Tips from the Barbaro Racing Team
Our #75 Toyota GR86 and #96 Subaru race cars run Barbaro RS-500 Racing pads. Bleed brakes before every race weekend and monitor brake temperatures with infrared thermometer.
Remember: Safety first. If you’re unsure about your brake condition, consult a professional before your track day.
