You’ve just installed new brake pads — but they’re not ready to perform at their best yet. Bedding-in (also called break-in or burnishing) is a critical process that transfers a thin layer of pad material onto your rotor surface, creating the optimal friction interface.
Why Bedding-In Matters
- Creates an even transfer layer on the rotor
- Removes any surface contamination
- Cures the pad’s binding resins gradually
- Prevents uneven deposits that cause vibration
- Maximizes pad life and performance
Street Pad Bedding Procedure
- Find a safe, low-traffic road
- Perform 6-10 moderate stops from 35 mph (55 km/h) to 5 mph (8 km/h)
- Allow 30 seconds between each stop for cooling
- Then perform 2-3 slightly harder stops from 45 mph (72 km/h) to 5 mph (8 km/h)
- Drive for 5-10 minutes without heavy braking to cool the system
- Avoid sitting with your foot on the brake while hot
Track/Sport Pad Bedding Procedure
- Start with the street procedure above
- Then perform 4-5 hard stops from 60 mph (96 km/h) to 10 mph (16 km/h)
- Drive at moderate pace for 10 minutes
- Park and allow brakes to cool completely (at least 30 minutes)
Common Bedding Mistakes
- Coming to a complete stop: Holding the brake while hot causes uneven pad deposits
- Skipping the process: Leads to glazed pads, noise, and reduced performance
- Being too aggressive too early: Gradual heat buildup is key
